Caregivers receive special training to support people living with Parkinson’s in Rotherham

Home Replace caregivers who have recently completed training as a Parkinson’s disease specialist

A local home care provider enrolled its staff in a specialized training program to help them better understand the needs of people with Parkinson’s disease.

Carers at Home Place Rotherham received the training through a partnership with Parkinson’s UK, the national charity which supports people with the disease, their friends, family and carers.

Thanks to this initiative, the company has 12 specialized caregivers trained in Parkinson’s disease and 12 more will have achieved this status by the end of the year.

The need for specialist care to better support people with Parkinson’s became evident following research conducted by the company which identified a high number of customers living at home with Parkinson’s.

Diane Elliot recently became a carer for Parkinson’s disease, she said: “It was really helpful to understand how important the medication regimen is in keeping symptoms at bay for someone living with the disease. of Parkinson’s.

“I feel like I have more knowledge now and have a much better understanding of how to help someone live well with Parkinson’s disease.”

Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing neurological disease in the world. Around 145,000 people in the UK experience it – a number expected to rise to 172,000 by 2030.
