Charity works with Scottish government and local council to build 22 accessible houses – AT Today
Construction has started on a development of new houses in Greenock, West Scotland, which will allow older people and people with disabilities to live as independently as possible.
Housing and care in Blackwood is transforming MacLehose Court into modern, self-contained apartments, which will support people with various mobility issues. In collaboration with GHI contractors, the redevelopment will see the old nursing home transformed into 22 new accessible homes.
Blackwood aims to make the new homes available to customers later this year, in partnership with the Scottish Government and Inverclyde Council, in a move that will increase the scale of accessible housing in Inverclyde.
Simon Fitzpatrick, Director of Development and Trade at Blackwood, said: “We are delighted that construction has now started on the site to deliver 22 new accessible homes to Greenock.
“We have seen an increase in demand for more accessible housing, so we are really excited to see the redevelopment of MacLehose Court begin as it will add to the supply of these units for customers. We look forward to seeing the homes completed and welcoming new customers later this year.
MacLehose Court operated as a care home until 2020, when the charity made the decision to move away from a residential setting and create a range of accessible housing essential to promote independent living.
Blackwood has a long history of creating quality, innovative and accessible homes to create homes that people of all ages and levels of mobility can enjoy. Its most recent development is Helenvale in Glasgow, a set of 24 very accessible and connected two-bedroom houses.
The association aims to help people live their lives to the fullest, by providing them with services that help them live independently.
As Blackwood works in 29 of Scotland’s 32 local authorities, it is more dispersed than most other care or housing providers and has used its investment in design and technology innovation, combined with excellent teams of staff, to give customers more choice and control across Scotland.
