Transfer News: Chelsea defender Levi Colwill joins Brighton & Hove Albion on loan
Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill has joined Brighton & Hove Albion on a season-long loan for next season, the two clubs have confirmed. It comes after Marc Cucurella made the switch to West London earlier today.
Brighton manager Graham Potter said he was looking forward to working with the youngster. The Seagulls would have beaten competition from many other teams for the signing of the 19-year-old. Speaking on the club website (h/t football.london), Potter had nothing but praise for the defender.
“Levi has huge potential and already showed his ability last season in the league and with England. I’m really looking forward to working with him on the training ground and in games over the course of the season.
The 19-year-old England Under-21 star has spent the last season on loan at Championship side Huddersfield. He played a pivotal role and led his side to the playoff final which they lost to Nottingham Forest. However, Colwill showed his talent and received praise from all over.
Now he has a chance to play in the top flight. Brighton finished ninth last season and they will be hoping for a European spot this time around. Colwill has the chance to help them do that and make a name for themselves.
A central defender by trade, he can also play as a left-back. With Thomas Tuchel in a defensive crisis, Colwill had the chance to impress him in pre-season and book a place in the squad for next season. But that wasn’t supposed to happen as an injury led to the player being left out of the pre-season squad.
But that doesn’t mean he’s not good enough for Chelsea. The club want to fight for silverware next season and that requires the expertise of experienced players. Colwill is fortunate to gain that required experience at Brighton. He can show why he is one of the best young talents in the country.
A loan move also benefits Tuchel and co. They can monitor the player’s performance during the season. something that might have been difficult to find had he stayed at Chelsea. Brighton play very fluid, possession-based football and Colwill will have a great chance to develop his game at the Amex.

At just 19, the Englishman has a long future ahead of him. If he can perform this season, he could have a real shot at making Chelsea’s squad for the 2023/24 season. As Thiago Silva enters the twilight of his great career, Colwill could be his replacement.
