Local Riding for the Disabled charity event this weekend
An equestrian charity for the disabled is having a family fun day in Oswaldtwistle this weekend.
The charity fundraising event will start at 9am on Sunday 31st July at the Britannia Inn Hotel in Haslingden Old Road, where you will have the opportunity to view Thwaites draft horses, as well as try your luck in a raffle to win a spa voucher worth £130.
The day is entirely for the benefit of Phoenix Riding for Disabled Association (RDA). RDA is a registered national charity, chaired by Princess Anne, which welcomes guests of all ages with mental, physical and learning disabilities to learn how to interact with and ride horses.
Phoenix RDA (a small branch of the national charity) fundraising event organizer Janet shared the immense benefits horseback riding can have.
She said: “It gives children and adults the opportunity to be outdoors and become as independent and confident as possible on horseback.
“It also gives wheelchair users freedom they never had before, so it’s a huge confidence-building factor.
“Our volunteers are also part of a big team, like a family, and they feel like they are helping someone else.”
Based in Barnoldswick, the charity also offers equine therapy to clients – an alternative, specialist form of therapy that involves working in conjunction with a horse, a therapist and an equine expert.
The association regularly organizes fundraising days for the benefit of the association, which works to support and improve the well-being of the disabled people it helps.
The money raised for the Sunday event is used to fund the installation of a hoist which Janet has shared and which could cost a few thousand pounds.
They have already received an extremely generous donation of £500 from Tailwaggers Kennels & Cattery who are dedicated to helping the charity.
Janet shared that without the kindness of ordinary local people and businesses, RDA Phoenix would not be able to perform the support work that it does.
“Grace, the owner of the Britannia Inn, is kindly letting us host the event in her pub, so a big thank you to her and Kate from Pendle RDA.
“Our volunteers and riding instructor Jenni dedicate their free time to helping the charity as we couldn’t do any of this without their help either.”
The upcoming event on Sunday will feature an assortment of fun and entertaining activities including a raffle, Play Your Cards Right game, face painting, plus refreshments and a sweet stand to keep you quenched and energized.
Local businesses will also be there with pop-up stalls, including Mia Jade Bakes – a retro cake company from Accrington which is reopening shop this Saturday July 30, and many other quirky independent businesses to check out.
Phoenix PDA is looking for more volunteers to support the cause. For more information, visit their Facebook page.
