Stars on Ice: NHS graduates to skate at star-studded charity event

(November 18, 2021Nantucket High School graduates Maya Balling and Maddy Belanger, members of the Skating Club of Boston’s Team Excel college synchronized skating team, will skate on Saturday, December 4 at the official opening of the club’s new state-of-the-art facility in Norwood. .

The two-time U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships Excel team is made up of full-time students who wish to continue competitive skating while pursuing their undergraduate or graduate studies. Over the past five years, team members have come from 15 states and attended 40 New England colleges and universities.

Team Excel opened its 2021 competitive season with a second place finish at Sunday’s Boston Synchronized Skating Classic.

The Dec. 4 event will be the first full capacity paid skating show in the Boston area since 2019 and will be the largest gathering of figure skating Olympians and American champions outside of the Olympics themselves. The event will be hosted by Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton, with proceeds going to the CARES Foundation, Mass General Brigham and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Other American Olympians and Champions at the event included 2014 Olympic Bronze Medalists Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, 2014 American Champion Max Aaron, 2014 Olympic Bronze Medalist Ashley Wagner and Olympic Bronze Medalist. by 2018 Mirai Nagasu.

Skaters who trained to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in 2022 include US International Classic silver medalist Jimmy Ma, US junior champions Maxim Naumov and Gabriella Izzo, bronze medalists in Skateboarding. America Audrey Lu and Misha Mitrofanov, and international contestants Emily Chan and Spencer Howe.
