Wrexham gymnasium prepare to train non-boxers for charity event

An eight-week training course for a charity boxing fight night, which has raised more than £73,000 so far, is due to start next week.

Russ Williams gyms in Wrexham and Caerwys are in partnership with Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB), a national organization which organizes events across the UK to raise money for charity through boxing.

The gyms run an eight week course for those 18 or over with little or no boxing experience for free, and at the end of the course there is a fight night held at the Brymbo Enterprise Center in Wrexham, all for the benefit of Cancer Research UK.

The courses started in 2015 and have so far raised a total of over £73,000, which equates to somewhere between £5,000 and £10,000 raised at each event at the end of the courses.

The next series of classes begin next week from Tuesday March 1 with a meeting for those interested this Thursday (February 24) to be held in Wrexham Gymnasium on Abbot Street above Penny Black.

Anyone over the age of 18 wishing to raise funds for the association can join the UWCB Wrexham Facebook group.

Russ Williams, the gyms owner and qualified trainer, says former participants have come from all over the Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham areas.

AFTER: The same group on their fight night

He said: “I’m really happy to do this for several reasons. One of them is that for a lot of people who are into the art, they’re out of shape and haven’t played sports before, but they want to raise money for cancer research, so it’s is a really nice group of people coming and it’s very nice to give them the opportunity to get back into shape and many of them are encouraged to maintain their fitness after the class is over.

At the event at the end of class, Russ explained, “They compete and it’s with hard hats and big 16oz gloves, so there’s no serious injury afterwards. It’s just fun for them. It’s nice to see that they enjoy the buildup and shaping. The maximum someone lost was about seven stones in eight weeks.

The meeting will take place at 8:00 p.m. and the following training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays will also start at 8:00 p.m.

The end of course show will take place on April 23 at the Brymbo Enterprise Center.
